Why do we watch movies?

Why do we watch movies? Are they simple entertainment, or do they reveal something deeper? And, why do we attach ourselves to their many heroes and heroines? Themes recur, myths are retold. Are these unrelated phenomena or could it be that movies simply reveal ‘our’ story?

We are the hero in every movie - the “hero with a thousand faces”. The battles that are fought, and the stories that are told, reveal the obstacles that we all face in our journey to remembering who we are. As a divine emanation of the ALL, the ONE, we are the SON of the Father that is metaphorized as the “Sun” making its way through the Heavens. All the world’s great philosophies intrinsically tell the same story – of how we must die to our small self (a.k.a. the ego) and rise to a full realization of our Higher Self.

Great writers, such as Shakespeare; great musicians, like Beethoven; or great artists in the vein of Michelangelo; all channeled this information. They provided guideposts for our remembering our Self. Great movies do the same.

All modern scripts – whether in movies, plays or books – follow the same basic pattern of the hero’s journey (falling into a conflict, a battle, and an overcoming – or not). This template draws its influence from ancient Egyptian metaphor as told on the temple walls, and as portrayed in the ascension story of Horus. In the Egyptian metaphor there are five main characters, each representing an aspect of ourselves – Nephthys (the body), Seth (the ego), Osiris (Our Higher Self), Isis (The Holy Spirit), and Horus (the soul). The story tells of our journey from our spiritual home, falling into the world intoxicated and blind with its trappings, and then back to our spiritual beginning by remembering our Father and coming to know ourselves as the Divine. This is ‘The story’ - the one story that all stories ever written, or that ever will be written, come from. It is the original ‘hero’s journey’. It is even from Horus’ ancient name “Heru” that we derive the word ‘hero’.

In this movie metaphor series, we examine the journey of each hero/heroine within the Egyptian initiatory context, as we study the role of the various characters, the etymology of their names, and their different levels of initiation traced through the colors and numerical references to a seven-step process revealed through our chakra system. We look for references to ancient myths and discover astrological symbolism that awaken us to the part of ourselves that is mirrored in metaphor and traced through the stars.

This is an ancient memory, one that has been told throughout time. Together, we embark on a treasure hunt to remember our Self.
